Peace here at home during those times as you refer, was enforced by the lash, chains and by fugitive slave laws in the south, massacring native women, children in the plains and West, not to mention rampant child labor throughout the northeast.

You exercised a rather parochial view of "peace" in the US.

Dcronlg..peace in the context of this article CLEARLY means "not at war". We weren't at war during the period of time cited in the article, as none of the things you mentioned constitute war, whether they were good things or not. (certainly, they were not)Before you go into a rant about things in the past relative to United States bashing, read about what others were doing. The Native Americans, for example, routinely warred with other tribes, committed genocide and routinely tortured or enslaved members of other tribes. Heck, just read a bit about the Iroquois Nation. They wiped out at least 2 entire tribes, the Erie and Mohegan's, and drove the Algonquin's and Huron's from their native lands into Canada. Yep, FINE folks, certainly better than those nasty old Americans. I might add that in Africa, slavery was hugely common. None of that excuses our wrongdoing, but clearly we're not unique in that regard.

Nicely put Paul. Dc, why do you have so much guilt over something you had no part in making happen? If you are feeling that guilty maybe you should just send your income to a different aggrieved party each year until you have assuaged your personal angst and made your personal reparations?
