Well, I a distinguished scholar once said that "discipline problems" are the reasonable response of students to an unreasonable system. That is not to blame teachers, but simply to observe that the "factory" in which they work is not attuned to student or socia needs. The test-crazy environment is bound to turn off the natural desire of the brain to learn: we have to explain WHY the brain, which cannot NOT LEARN (e.g., staring out the window for other stimuli) doesn't learn! Look at other countries, such as Finland. Students go to school fewer hours per day but teachers are among the top 10% of all HS grads. They are highly respected. That small society knows that it depends on education to exist. Meanwhile, there are no sports, no proms and other social distractions. Students are expected, by their parents and society, to learn and support society: that is their job! Everyone in the US is buying into a corporate model of input-output: learning isn't a produc

It would also help if we stopped cutting/sharing our sports, firing teachers before they "learn their trade", and hiring more administrative staff to do what used to be a principals job. I agree with the "test-crazy" thought too. Gee how did we get people like Bill Gates and such when apparently anyone over 35 went to such horrible schools that by today standards never taught us anything...
