I agree on making them consistent but that won't happpen doing it your way either. When BOCES decided to go to the reginal calendar, districts were given a year to come into compliance with the calendar. The original purpose of the 2 weeks at Easter according to the pundits was so that the children could be home to help families with spring planting. With a decline in the number of farms and mechanization that is no longer an issue. The issue then becomes the cost(extra) to bus the BOCES students to and from school while the rest of the district is off and of what to do with the same students when they are in district because their BOCES center is closed. They should all be the same not choosing what works best for a district. They are all required to teach the Common Core curriculum.

BOCES should never have had the power to dictate anything to the sending schools. BOCES was originally a service to those schools. How that changed is beyond me.

This topic is all the more reason to go with a County wide school district.

Having two split breaks is worse, educationally speaking, than having just one break for two weeks. Ask any teacher. They'll tell you. The constant starting and stopping stifles learning.

All of the sending schools need to get together, present a unified front, and send nobody to BOCES until BOCES complies with the 2 week scheduled break. Even if it was just the "Alt Ed." and Disabled students, that ought to do it.

Seems to me the schools are the dictating customer in this situation and not BOCES.

Dcronlg, it was BOCES some years back that made the change, forcing many schools to change as well due to conflicts and expense of transportation.

Remember when we actually celebrated Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays on the actual dates in alternating years?

Because that because "too complicated," we went to the generic Presidents Day every year.

Fer cryin' out loud - can't the adults who make these decisions simply sit down and agree on a consistent policy?

And another thing... :-)

If they can't agree on something as simple and rudimentary as Spring Break, how can taxpayers ever expect them to get serious about consolidations/mergers where - gasp! - administrators might lose their jobs...

And these are the same people that prepare budgets?
