Help volunteers assist area

Editor, OBSERVER: I commend the area Fire Departments for their efforts to increase their volunteer ranks. But, they could really boost the numbers if New York state would step in....

It's my understanding that volunteer firefighters do receive a tax break (albeit small) in exchange for their service. Also, the volunteer recruitment effort is a statewide campaign. NY is trying to help the local departments.

I would counter that any tax break should come from property taxes since that is where the cost benifit of having volunteers is.

Sure this would only benifit property owners, although it shouldn't be to hard to make it such that a tenant can transfer it to the person they rent from as part of their rental fee.
