Different, but still greed

April 30, 2013

It is not greedy or selfish to enjoy the fruits of one’s own labor. It is greedy, selfish and slothful to try to live off the fruits of your neighbors’ labors....

Easy fix: A Graduated Flat Tax, a different percentage for every $20,000 one makes with a cap of say 40% on the highest levels, say everything over $250,000. That's only 7% higher than now. NO EXEMPTIONS! Secondly, fold everyone in the country into Medicare, eliminate VA Hospitals, replace with vouchers for veterans to supplement their Medicare, and institute a VAT (basically a Federal Sales Tax) to pay for it. Now the money coming in is steady and fair, and health insurance is fixed, and Congress can return to only fighting their dogmatic principles without bankrupting us.

Just do not think it is fair that a billionaire pays a lower tax rate than a middle class working person or that a corporation pays NO taxes at all.

Why should companies who are making HUGE profits pay their workers such low wages that they qualify for social services, such as food stamps and heap? We as taxpayers are supplementing their workers so the CEOs can make even MORE money. Really anyone think that is fair?

Take a look at the growing gap in income and wealth in our country in the past few decades and tell me if you think that is fair.

Fairness and greed are not the same thing. It is not greed that makes one work towards fairness. It is morals and doing what is right.

The libs cannot exist without this tax the wealthy thing in the name of fairness. Judeye is all set to set straight all the chemists, inventors, regulators, tax man, gun mfgers etc. You name it judeye will set them straight. Christopher too is in love with govt. all of this can be traced back to Woodrow wilson and his income tax. they dems are too dumb to come up with anything. hence their need to steal. FDR was the epitome of this. he nearly destroyed america. Judeye is forcing her religion upon us, like a good activist women should. too bad they dont invent anything that sells. So libs, tell me of the great value of your beloved big govt !stealing is OK when you are a democrat. The libs prove it every day.

Mr Westlund -- right now, 2.5 workers are getting taxed, as are the employers at the same $ amount -- FICA withholding -- to pay for your monthly Social Security. Its a fact -- plain, simple, obvious and easily verifiable -- that's how the SS system works, and has done so since FDR.

Your monthly SS is a prime example of your belief, "It is greedy, selfish and slothful to try to live off the fruits of your neighbors' labors."

When you factor in your Medicare coverage, you are doubly guilty, doubly selfish and doubly slothful.

But somehow, I doubt you own up to these facts.

dc, do you think of anything except govt benefits ? westlund has a valid point about taxation. Let me quote wilson who wanted an income tax on the wealthy. "The business man would have to be more clever to make more money to offset the taking of his money by the govt." Thats why i call the democrats the dumbocrats. At the heart of the matter, they can invent or make no business, except that of taxation to steal. Hey dc , we had to limit prez terms as FDR was so bad for the country it was understood that he almost destroyed it. Like a good liberal should. Dc , I am so unlearned you bought my stuff in the store. So libs, tell us of how great this system is , made by democrats to replace the plantation and jim crow for subjugation. Please show steiner how unlearned he is !I am reasdy for fairness, fair share, etc. all liberal empty buzzwords for the empty minded libs. dont disappoint me libs .

Nice idea Paul but I believe we already have a graduated tax scheme. What part of "flat" eludes your comprehension?

Judeye you keep pounding on that rate paid by the rich and corporations. There are many CEOs that would love to comeback to America with their corporate profits. But Obama wants 35% of the corporations profits as a tax rate. Lower it to 15, like most of the rest of the world, and the companies would be here. But Odumbo and his minions can't get that 15% of a couple of trillion is just that tad bit better than 35% of NOTHING. And I don't begrudge rich working people their lower rate. It's still one heck of a dollar amount and they aren't using any more of the services than you or I. It's not their responsibility to pay for your personal wish list for society.

And get ready for 33 MILLION instant "citizens" when the illegals get to claim welfare benefits courtesy of the "immigration" bill that congress is working on...that won't do anything to bring the country closer to bankruptcy, will it? Why would anyone with half a brain not be screaming to stop this fiasco in the making? Oh, because the new "citizens" will vote democrat. I sure hope all you fine folks screaming for fairness and amnesty have thought about what you are about to be handed...

Mikedavis..what YOU call a flat tax is the biggest tax cut to the richest Americans in history, and that's why the right wing pushes for it. Middle class people with a flat tax, minus any deductions for homes, etc., would get killed! You'd know that if you read anything instead of just parroting whatever right wing nonsense rolls out of the FOX News talking heads or the Tea Party politicians. My proposal would maintain fairness, maintain income, and would eliminate the need for professional tax preparers, anyone with a calculator could do their own in 5 minutes.

Mike Davis, AGAIN, READ SOMETHING!!!! President Bush proposed this a LONG time ago. Now, the Republicans are supporting it again to solicit the Hispanic vote, just like the Democrats. To blame it all on the Democrats just shows your total ignorance of anything not between the VERY narrow lines of the right wing extremists.

By the way Mikedavis, I'm totally against amnesty for illegals, or for considering their children born here as citizens (a total twisting of the meaning behind the 14th Amendment)

"1) Exxon Mobil made $19 billion in profits in 2009. Exxon not only paid no federal income taxes, it actually received a $156 million rebate from the IRS, according to its SEC filings.

2) Bank of America received a $1.9 billion tax refund from the IRS last year, although it made $4.4 billion in profits and received a bailout from the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department of nearly $1 trillion.

3) Over the past five years, while General Electric made $26 billion in profits in the United States, it received a $4.1 billion refund from the IRS.

4) Chevron received a $19 million refund from the IRS last year after it made $10 billion in profits in 2009.

5) Boeing, which received a $30 billion contract from the Pentagon to build 179 airborne tankers, got a $124 million refund from the IRS last year."

Let me know if you want more examples.

PhilJulian..what a silly comment.

As if Liberals are the only ones who benefit from our tax dollars. We are all in this together. We all benefit from paying taxes. In fact, is that not why we pay them in the first place?

Now we all might have different ways we think those taxes should be used. I for one think the defense dept could use less funding, while programs that teach our young children could use more.

Look what they just did by voting to fund the air traffic controllers so people will not have to have their travel delayed. Yet, did nothing to the cuts in funding for Head Start or Meals on Wheels. Guess some think it is more important to keep planes on schedule than to educate our young or feed our seniors.

Wonder which one is liberal?

Just read up on Ben Carson.

He might have some valid points. However, could not get over his use of words in opposition to same sex marriages, such as **********. I also do not think that his idea of a savings account for medical would cover all the medical expenses if you became very ill, like cancer. I have friends who are paying, with excellent insurance, over $3,000 a month in medical bills.

Still on his opinion of President Obama.." I don't want to sit here and say all of his policies are bad. What I would like to see more often in this nation is an open and intelligent conversation, not people just casting aspersions at each other." I agree

We all need to LISTEN more to each other. I know then we could find much more common ground than any of us realize.

MikeDavis..which companies would return all their operations to the USA if the tax rate were lowered? Also, as so many companies pay NO taxes, I suggest these companies change accountants.

It DOES matter what the tax rate is. It is NOT the amount, it is the rate of taxes each of us pay.

joew..NO income taxes.

Kinda like those that say that 47% of the people pay no taxes. What they mean is INCOME taxes. We all pay taxes every time we buy food or clothing or gasoline.

These companies are getting off from paying their fair share. To me, that is just plain wrong.

Judeye-oh I see you changed your statement from NO taxes right? However I must inform you that Exxon-Mobil paid right at 31 Billion in INCOME taxes last year,Chevron right at 10 Billion in INCOME taxes last year and since GE's figure is not yet public I could not get that info. Other taxes paid are state and local taxes and payroll taxes. I am not a big fan of any of the above Corporations but we do want to be "fair and balanced" don't we? By the way did you watch O'Reilly last night? Man was he ever upset about the Boston Bombing terrorists getting almost 100K in Welfare.

JUDEYE - I respect your opinion but you are a classic liberal. As I see it there are two types of people in this country. First, there are those who want government to take care of them from cradle to grave. Give it to me now for free and I don't care where the money comes from. Second, there are those who knock themselves out trying to earn a living, pay their taxes and raise a family. These are the people who don't want to pay for the freeloaders. Yes, we need a social net to provide for those who have fallen on hard times. However, our system of welfare has become a form of socialism and it serves to destroy any incentives to be respectable, productive and creative citizens. A good example is the Boston terrorist family who reportedly received about $100,000 in taxpayer assistance prior to blowing up innocent citizens. Is that the system that you think is so great?

Marcia-cant speak for Mr Westlund but since we (The US)are the most generous country in the world regarding caring for others we should get just a bit more(as a percentage) of Gods grace and blessings.
