Dcronig I am impressed I actually agree 100% with your input on this one! The only difficulty I can see ahead is parent participation only due to the need for both parents having to hold jobs.

Part 2; I also remember when final exams and Regents were part of the norm. That stress was on everybody. We all seemed t get by just fine without any counselors or medications.

Mathias, sorry to have upset you with the truth. WQe're testing to standards that haven't exisated in years is at least part of the problem. Inclusion of special needs students, or at least a lot of them, into mainstream education is stupid, a waste of time, money and resources, and another example of left-wing influence on the educational system. When high school students come home with history projects that require poster boards and colored pencils, I rest my case. I could go on and on, but I am NOT blaming teachers. I am blaming those who teach THEM, theoretical educators without a clue of what the real world is like. Removing the uneducable from the system, as well as those who are nothing but budding criminals and professional disrupters would be a huge improvement and would show an immediate improvement in test scores. Funny thing, tests. I can remember when Regents tests were just part of the norm, no stress at all.

Not all students are equal. So long as the system guarantees the least motivated/capable students do just as good as the most motivated/capable students, the education can only occur at the lowest common denominator (no one fails that way). Instead of investing in education by rewarding the highest achieving students with advanced learning opportunities, we have decided to pour all the resources into trying to teach students who can’t or don’t care to take advantage of higher education. Forcing the least capable students to study the same curriculum as the most capable students is an injustice to both. Wasting resources pandering to the least motivated students is an injustice to the least capable students, the most capable students, and the taxpayers.

Continuation in handicapping the system based on results isn't the fix. If you’re not conditioning a child’s mind & spirit to learn, you’re never going to get a student to succeed. This takes the educator, the PARENTS (if there are any left out there), & the student. If there is not an active plan to train a students mind on how to think and be responsible to their education then it’s just smoke through a key hole. Personally, I was never a great student. With my kids, I have taken on this strategy and both kids are and always have been straight-A kids and to a certain degree, don’t fret when a test/project is placed in their laps because of their conditioning. They have a trusting partnership, if you will, with their parents & encouraged to do nothing more then listen and apply themselves. Strong educators who care + Active & involved Parents + A well conditioned child with goals = better results. Simple math.

Christopher, as usual your comments are not based on knowledge but your own skewed opinion. To call it dumbing down is absurd!! It is clear you see only what you want to. You don't acknowledge the fact that dumped into this new equation is the whole group of special needs children and to judge their teachers performance on their results on a test that is the same as all other children take is so far out in left field it is not funny especially since said test needs to be read to the student and they still have no clue. Further, many children freak at test taking even on a classroom level. JTNYMOM is absolutely correct when she says that teaching to the test serves absolutely no purpose except to prove that a teacher is forced to that and they get as stressed out as the students about it, removing a well rounded education from the equation because there isn't enough time in the day to do that and teach to the tests too.

If it were just Dunkirk and Buffalo turning in bad results we could blame it on poverty and language issues. But the poor results are statewide. I think it's fair to conclude that the sandards are set far too high but there is another issue that's worth mentioning. The State Education Department assumes that all students are intellectually inclined and capable of succeeding in regents level activity. Many students would be far better off in a trade related education. That's how it's done in many other industrialized countries and that's the prbable reason why our test scores are behind much of the rest of the world. We don't have a problem with teachers or students. We have a problem with The State Education Department.

Standardized tests are here to stay; they been used for decades and will continue to be used throughout our educational system. It will get worse.

Our public school structure is based on a 19th century agricultural economic model and it needs to change: no more summers off, only a month and the school day will need to be longer. Parents will need to get more and more involved and responsible. Teachers, as professionals, will need to become more empowered. Costs will increase, meaning so will taxes and we'll have to reprioritize our spending.

These changes will come slowly but they will have to come, or else more and more international students who are used to the system I mentioned above, will continue to fill more and more seats in colleges that used to go to US kids (psst...its happening already...).

NYS *****! I worked with my son nightly, did all the prep work the teacher sent home and talked him through his "freak outs" about THE TESTS! YES kids need to learn and be more proficient however stressing them out and stressing out the teachers and only "teaching to the test" does no one any good. I hope NYS learns from this and makes the changes to the system that need to be made!!

No surprises here at all. Lots of excuses. Ethnic and racial divides have continued for decades, in spite of more than equal opportunity. I'd guess it's something beyond the control of the schools, and I think that's a pretty obvious and responsible guess. Providing Spanish speaking everything is apparently not working and neither is Affirmative Action. Overall Education for all students is declining for many reasons but the main one is a consistent dumbing down for decades to make sure nobody gets their feelings hurt. None of this is the fault of TEACHERS, it's the fault of professional EDUCATORS with government jobs to oversee what Teachers do. Tests are not going to fix the problems of that or bad parenting.
