‘Double tragedy’ worsens in Haiti

August 25, 2013

What do you think of when you see the word, “cholera?” I used to think: a treatable STD, ergo a nonissue. Countries like Haiti don’t have the luxury to think that way....

I appreciate that Schwab is putting this case in the public eye. But, must say that the opening paragraph is an odd way to begin. Cholera is not an STD. Maybe the writer is trying to convey that she has had the luxury of not even knowing what kind of disease it is at all. But, the way it is written, that sentence comes across more as though the issue in Haiti is that it is not easily treatable there (but still an STD). If the reader continues, there is explanation about how cholera is transmitted -- and sexual transmission is notably absent. But, it's a distracting choice -- and possibly verging on irresponsible -- not to note that the writer's original thoughts were completely off-base and that it is not an STD. (Irresponsible in that a brief glance at the opening paragraph might lead a casual reader to place the blame for cholera spread on Haitians' sexual activity and pass judgment on that, when in fact the two are completely unrelated.)

Nice article, Sarah, but they'll have problems finding "patient 0" and assigning blame/liability.

The UN is nothing more than a hole that we(those of us that pay taxes) keep pouring money into. It simply needs to be pushed over into the East River, good reef for the fish!
