For the 1 disagree, a Pistol Permit in Chautauqua County is currently taking 6-9 months. This is straight from the mouth of clerk at the office. A permit will also have a price tag of around $130. Most decent pistols will cost at least $300, and require some serious practice to hit anything, adding more cost for practice ammunition. On the other hand, many shotguns are available for that price, and for the inexperienced, a 410 gauge is easy, a 20 gauge not too bad for recoil, and basically you just point and shoot, with VERY little practice, you'll hit what you point at. (with shot, of course. Combo's of 2&4 shot is a nice mix)And you can buy one the same day you want it. I recommend a pump.

You don't need a permit for a shotgun, it takes a LOT less skill to hit something you aim at, and even the noise of "jacking" a round into the chamber will scare most criminals. Be careful out there! I had 5 gallons (I think and assume) of gas siphoned from my car last week.
