I guess what I'm saying is we need to make it VERY VERY uncomfortable for people on welfare that are popping out 4,5,6 kids. At some point someone is going to have to make the unpopular decision to cut off the funds.

Thoughtful, have you ever been to Rite Aid or CVS. They sell prophylactics in all of them. People have more access to birth control than ever before. So your argument is bogus. Judeye, thanks for the numbers. The more kids you have the more money you get. Plus the low income housing, food stamps, medicaid, free heat, electric, phone, and water.

federal poverty guidelines

1 $11,490 2 15,510 3 19,530 4 23,550 5 27,570 6 31,590 7 35,610 8 39,630

For families/households with more than 8 persons, add $4,020 for each additional person.

Does this answer your question. Now if a family has an additional child to be able to collect a whooping extra $4,200 in benefits, don't you think they just might have a problem..with math if not mental illness.

In this country, government, from Washington down to the smallest village, has always been of, by and for the people. Unfortunately, government has become of the corrupt, by the ignorant and for the lazy. The mobilization of the former hippies combined with the laziest generation have taken over.

Say what? Our country has always been corrupt, starting at day one with Alexander Hamilton asking his banker friends to help pay for the Revolutionary War in exchange for Government favors. The only real difference is that the corporate Bush/Clinton dynasty has become so powerful that they no longer even try to hide behind the illusion of democracy. The matrix is broken, but people don’t want to believe it, so they point fingers everywhere but at the truth. One can only change the power structure from within and once within one has no incentive to change it. The Power Elite, by HG Wells is a good place to start if you really want understand the corrupt power structure of the good old

I'd like to respond to HAVE A NICE DAY: The trend in Republican politics is to deny abortion, deny birth control... condemn minorities for HAVING children, and trying to deny food for those same children. I'd love to see so-called conservatives PICK A SIDE.... either offer unlimited birth control and abortion... or show themselves to NOT be decent Christians by withholding food from Children. And WHY do they have kids? Either their religion, or their love of family... JUST LIKE YOU.

Judeye, I'm still waiting for your answer to my question. WHY do people on welfare continue to have babies? If they can't support themselves why would they think it is appropriate to bring another person into this world? I know the answer. Do you?

If Jesus didn't ask if a person had a right to be hungry, why must you? Yes, Jobs for welfare recipients is a good idea, and requiring able-bodied recipients to work is reasonable.... but it took ALL immigrant populations generations to be native English speakers... and Puerto Rico is a Spanish Speaking possession of the US where ALL residents, as US citizens speak SPANISH. As for BLEEDING HEARTS...Did you know that the origin of that phrase was CHRISTIAN CHARITY AND COMPASSION? Although we have no national religion, it would be nice to see ALL compassionate people CONCERNED about the hungry and the poor instead of ANGRY ... and.. maybe time for anger toward the REAL welfare queens... the wealthy.

commentor...that is a rude and personal question and frankly NONE of your*******business.

I have been a 'bleeding heart' well before I ever had a child, let alone a grandchild. I have spent my entire life helping others in the field of social work. It came from something faith and moral obligation to others. Something some (apparently like you) just cannot comprehend.

By leeches and parasites are you referring to all the greedy businesses in NYthat received IDA corporate welfare? Do you know how much this state has wasted giving tax breaks and handouts to businesses who promise to create decent paying jobs and then fail to come through? Did the $800 billion dollar federal bailout go to welfare recipients? I do believe welfare reform is necessary to root out people who scam the system. Something our current county administration is not aggressively persuing by the way.

And you have NO right to ask such a nosy question, Commentor. Not only are you conservative posters misinformed, but you're rude as well.

Judeye here's a question for you....are you raising your grandchildren and getting money for them? Is that why you are such a bleeding heart? Question was asked before and never answered.

Cry us a river, judeye. Whta is it with you and the other bleeding hearts that can see no wrong in the leeches and parasites of the system?

First off, why are we granting welfare HANDOUTS to non-citizens? So they have a green card and they get this "free" money? They don't even have to work to get it. I want my heat bill stipend. Oh and my rent check covered - well, my mortgage payment, same difference.

Am I for assisting a hard-working American father supporting a wife and kids on 30K/yr, who diligently pays his income taxes, and simply is suffering in a depressed economic time? Absolutely. THAT is what welfare was meant for. What welfare has become is a cash stash for the willfully indigent. That's why all the greenies flock to DK, NY - for the "free" NYS money.

judeye and all the rest of the bleeding heart libs get their opinions from surveys and what other libs tell them most of the rest of us go by what we actually see for ourselves!

Judeye, in addition to more welfare money and food stamps you forgot to mention the free medical, housing, heat, cable, electric, water, and phone. Cradle to grave is what they want. And that's exactly what NY provides.

Most of the comments here reflect total IGNORANCE of those on public assistance or the benefits they receive.

I blame our politicians and even this paper that continues the myths and mis-truths.

Much easier than facing the TRUTH that we have a very high rate of people living in or below poverty. Ignore them...especially if you are a Christian.

HaveANiceDay..Quick question back to you

Do you have any idea how much a person's welfare check or food stamps, etc increases with the addition of another child?

Thought not..or you would never imply such silliness....

PR, everything you said is wrong and simple-minded. Not to mention arrogant. Hate to tell you, but liberal Americans in the great state of NY (and it is in many ways) are Americans too. And we don't want to secede. Your opinion isn't the only one. You don't have a lock on truth. And everything you think isn't necessarily right or desirable. Too many egotistical, selfish mindsets on this board.
