Some healing after ‘destroying’

November 7, 2013

Giving thanks is an enduring legacy of American social history. Our forebears gave thanks for the end of bad happenings — the Civil War, cholera epidemics, rabies outbreaks, and a host of other ills....

We really need to kick the majority party in the Senate out the door. They do not represent what this nation was founded as. All they want to do is tax and then spend more then what they take in. I know their leader is part of the problem but the Senate majority leader and 60th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives are the biggest problem.

Judeye, Johnson couldn’t get his party to support the Civil Rights Act so he turned to Republicans which readily helped him get it though. Us “Yankees” love to blame it all on Southern Democrats but since the release of letters from Jackie Kennedy Onassis, we’ve come to know how she along with JFK and Bobby felt about Martin Luther King, who BTW was a Republican. Don’t forget the illegal wire taps and harassment of MLK happened under a Kennedy and Johnson Justice Department.

Don’t forget why LBJ wanted Civil Rights reform and welfare. His statement aboard AF One to two Democrat governors has come to pass. “I'll have those ****** voting Democratic for the next 200 years

Tea Party is FAR from the mainstream GOP

Growing up in a very Republican home, we still were taught to share and care for others. My mother was strongly Pro Choice. (she thought men should have nothing to say about it as it did not directly affect them) They believed in compromise after discussion and debates. It USED to be the party of the intellectuals.

I long for that party to return. We need to have good checks and balances, meaning both parties need to engage in discussion, debate, and then compromise to get things done.

What has this current HOUSE accomplished? Anyone want to take that one on? And we pay them how much? and they get how many days off?

Kick them to the curb..they no longer represent us the people.

Democrats 1964: Segregation is the law so just accept it.

HUH????? only select Dems in the South ever said that ..you forgot...

Pres Johnson..who called for Voter's right legislation (which the SC just gutted)..signed the Civil Rights Act...and with much COURAGE Johnson federalized the Alabama National Guard called for a full investigation of the Ku Klux Klan and He asked for the early passage of the bill in order to "eliminate from this nation every trace of discrimination and oppression that is based upon race and color."

It is not party to party..it is moral to immoral..right to wrong

Pres Johnson, particularly coming from the South, showed much COURAGE in defending the rights of EVERYONE, including people of color.

Psycho, you're splitting hairs. You're right--political changes are as intricate and complex as the eras over which they happen, and it's "foolhardy" to simplify. But when you're speaking to the Tea Party rabble on this site--well, you gotta be in the ball park, that's all. There was nothing "modern" about 19th century politics. If you are into splitting hairs, that zeitgeist was driven largely by religious fervor, and that alone distinguishes the abolitionists from modern Democrats--or anyone modern since we live in a highly cynical era. But that doesn't mean rough approximations don't indicate the evolutionary scenario I laid out.

Both parties have evolved over time. To think that Lincoln was anything like a modern day republican is foolhardy. The zeitgeist in NY led to the elimination of slavery as early as 1832…long before Lincoln. This thought was in line with the "modern Democratic" value. So, whatever they called themselves back then, it certainly wasn't how the modern Republicans think. And who keeps bashing liberals? Why do you hate Jesus? Not that I'm a liberal. But to so narrowly define a party as liberal when Dems are actually fiscal conservatives/social liberals, and Reps are social conservatives/fiscal liberals. We can prove that all day long. Calling a group "liberal"? Which party is responsible for 70% of our nations debt? Yes susie, it is the Republicans.

Also, Stang--comparing slavery to the Affordable Care Act--well, that just lacks human decency.

But here's the thing, Stang. The 19th century Democratic party has evolved into today's Republican party. A red state is a red state is a red state...whether red is Democrat one century or Republican another. And 1960's Democrats were caught in that evolution--bit of an identity crisis, yes. But the issue is settled now. A Lincoln Republican is now a centrist Democrat. Think Clinton, think Obama. Centrist.

Its that simple. see kathleen sebellius's comments about who she works for.The tax payers are not on her list. Another woman goofing it up ! like Ida Tarbell, carrie nation, gals at epa,. how do the libs steer the arguments ? they call any disagreement a personal attack. exactly how am I personally attacking here? Are facts an attack ? Just read the gals articles. they are concerned about food, climate change , fracking, etc. No real science. Just feminist fell good baloney. Then you posters say, an attack, foxnews ! thats not an actual debate or facts. just stupid opinions. hey illiterate posters, if foxnews says something that can be verified by other means is that right wing and therefore bad ? christopher shold be proud of you. His liberal media and the substandard schooling has made everyone dumber.

hey timeisthe fire and the rest. You really show your ignorance about women and science. nearly all or all of the major industrial processes we have running were invented by men.I have said this so many times, PBs confirms it as well as any reference material. You posters are mentally challenged. Try watching PBS, raw and ready or any of its other specials. You libs just dont know any thing real about the world. the women lag hugely. This has been on TV, books, busines papers galore. On TV there was a special about getting gals into computer fields. It is still, after 60 years, dominated by men. All you posters lack real facts. You lack analytical capabilty.the gals, like we read here are healing the planet or other such nonsense. nurture, they call it.

Noone said anything that america is heading toward a greece like economy. Whattsa matter libs, cant think? Youu posters are great for calling names , but not much else. Hey dk, you are confused the most. You dont catch the connection between the the libs control of education . I have 19th century encyclopedias. i doubt if any inner city kid could read them. They are so fact laden. The libs have made everyone dumber . Yet all you posters say that i am looney, off my meds, etc.

I enjoy reading & debating opposing views on this site, as we all do. Many are amusing, while others offer valid points. However, to spin the blame onto the Dems and deny that Tea Party extremists led the recent govt shutdown has got to be the funniest.

Some posts actually sound like you're auditioning for a job with FOX NEWS :)

I don't understand the poster on this site. It seems that some feel the need to personally attack those they disagree with, instead of just giving their arguements. Of course Steiner is at the top of the list, but there are others too. This should be a forum of ideas, not personal attacks.

The only way a law can be amended is for it to go back to the legislative branch to be voted upon by the people. But Obamacare has been amended some 19 times after signature. It's not a law. it's an edict

It is obvious it was the tea party who shut down the government. They are the ones who were cheering for it. Bachmann said it was the right thing to do. Cruz was hailed as a conquering hero back in Texas. Not one democrat said they were happy about it but many TPs did.
