While it is a wonderful thing that the home, family and pets at 32 N. Ermine was saved by the brave men of the Dunkirk fire department, to say they are “low funded” has to be addressed. The fire department is anything but low funded and its members are among the highest paid of any department in the city. Being a life-long union member, it pains me to say this…but fair is fair and truth is truth. Due to an incredibly generous contract…negotiated by incompetent mayors…which includes, among many other perks, mandatory staffing of four firehouses in a five square-mile area, they easily top the overtime ledger each month despite the fact there were only about twenty-five fires all of last year. The reason all four fire companies responded so quickly, was probably because they had nothing else to do. With so few fires and so many men staffing too many firehouses, it’s time this kind of delusion be put to rest.
