He was a 1980 graduate of Southwestern Central School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1990 to 1991. He earned his associate's degree in art in 1998 from Jamestown Community College and his bachelor of arts degree from the State College at Fredonia in 2001, where he was on the dean's list. He had been employed as a housing inspector by HUD for the past three years.
Rodney was an accomplished artist and painted the murals on each of the floors at High Rise Apartments, and was a drummer for many local bands. He wrote, directed and produced commercials for HUD. He loved to travel throughout the United States and was much adored by many nieces and nephews.
Besides his father of Lakewood and his mother of Sinclairville, he is survived by his stepmother, Deirdre A. Welling of Lakewood; a brother, Sean N. Welling of Newmanstown, Pa.; his paternal grandfather, William Welling of Holland, Mich.; his stepgrandmother, Valeri Welling of Holland; his maternal grandmother, Joyce Kidd Johnson of Jamestown; and his stepgrandfather, Andrew Johnson of Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, E. ''Dee'' Welling, who died in 1993; and his maternal grandfather, William E. Kidd, who died at 1991.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home.
No funeral service will be observed. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
