September 1, 2013
Associated Press

GREENBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Four people were killed when their car jumped a guardrail on a highway north of New York City and caught fire.

State police responded to the accident just before 6 a.m. Sunday on the Sprain Brook Parkway in Greenburgh, about 20 miles from New York City.

Police tell Westchester County's Journal News (http://lohud.us/1e4yEjj ) that the rental Volkswagen Golf was traveling north when it rolled over the guardrail onto a grassy shoulder and hit a bridge abutment by an overpass.

The car was crushed by the impact.

Police say the victims were so badly disfigured that their genders could not immediately be determined.

Police do not yet know what caused the crash.
