LATHAM, N.Y. (AP) — The New York Army National Guard is deploying troops and aircraft to Texas for training as part of final preparations for duty in the Middle East.
Sixty soldiers and 10 Blackhawk helicopters of the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade's 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation based in suburban Albany depart Wednesday morning for Fort Hood. It's the first wave of troops being sent to the Texas base over the next two weeks. In all, the deployment will include more than 450 soldiers and aircrews.
The brigade will train at Fort Hood before its eventual deployment to Kuwait at the end of the year.
The 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade headquarters last deployed in May of 2004 to Iraq and returned in November 2005. The unit supported flight operations across four provinces of north-central Iraq.
