EDINBURG, N.Y. (AP) — An off-duty New York State Police officer has died after the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed near a lake in upstate New York.

State police say Sunday Senior Investigator Timothy J. Cowper died after crash landing just before 4 p.m. in a wooded lot. They say witnesses called 911 to say the plane had experienced difficulties.

Authorities say the 55-year-old Cowper was an experienced pilot and a 30-year veteran of the state police. They said the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transpiration Safety Board would continue the investigation with state police.

Authorities said the plane crashed in a wooded area on the northern side of the Great Sacandaga Lake in the town of Edinburg, north of the Batchellerville Bridge.

Sacandaga Lake is about 48 miles northwest of Albany.
