EDINBURG, N.Y. (AP) — An off-duty New York State Police trooper has died after the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed near a lake in upstate New York.

State police say Senior Investigator Timothy J. Cowper died after crash landing just before 4 p.m. Sunday in a wooded lot. They say witnesses called 911 to say the plane had experienced difficulties.

Authorities say the 55-year-old Cowper was an experienced pilot and a 30-year veteran of the state police. They said the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transpiration Safety Board would investigate with the state police to determine the cause of the crash.

Authorities said the plane crashed on the northern side of the Great Sacandaga Lake in the town of Edinburg, north of the Batchellerville Bridge.

Sacandaga Lake is about 48 miles northwest of Albany.
