NEW YORK (AP) — An off-duty New York City police officer has been arrested on charges including vehicular manslaughter after an accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian.
The accident happened shortly after 6 a.m. Friday on Richmond Terrace on Staten Island.
Police say a Ford Escape driven by off-duty officer Joseph McClean struck 51-year-old William Hemphill.
Hemphill was pronounced dead at Richmond University Medical Center.
The 29-year-old McClean was arrested on charges including vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.
No information on an attorney for the officer was immediately available.
The investigation is ongoing.
