New York Times endorses de Blasio for NYC mayor

October 27, 2013
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — The editorial board of the New York Times has endorsed Democrat Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'-zee-oh) for mayor of New York City.

The paper says Saturday (http://nyti.ms/17n9om9 ) the public advocate has good ideas. It highlighted de Blasio's calls to reform the NYPD's use of the stop-and-frisk technique, his plan to add 200,000 units of affordable housing and his goal to expand prekindergarten by taxing the wealthy.

The Times endorsed City Council Speaker Christine Quinn during the September Democratic primary.

The Times said GOP candidate Joe Lhota (LOH'-tuh) has served the city well as a deputy mayor and former chairman of the MTA but said his campaign has been based on fear.

Polls show de Blasio with a strong lead in the race. The general election is Nov. 5.
