3-year-old Northern NY girl dies; charges possible

December 17, 2013
Associated Press

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — A 3-year-old northern New York girl who was the victim of a beating as an infant has died.

Troopers say Kate Cawvey died Monday morning after police were summoned to the home near Three Mile Bay on Lake Ontario where she lived with her adoptive parents.

The girl was severely injured when she was 11 months old by her biological mother's former boyfriend, Kelly Keegan, who was baby-sitting. Keegan was found guilty last year of first- and second-degree assault and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Court documents at the time of Keegan's arrest said Cawvey suffered traumatic brain injury.

The girl's death will prompt a medical review, and if cause of death was medically related to the assault, more charges are possible against Keegan.
