HERKIMER, N.Y. (AP) — A 27-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the death of an elderly central New York man.
State police have charged Shannon Marie Hardy-Sekel of Little Falls with two counts of criminal possession of a forged Instrument. Troopers say she cashed checks belonging to Donald Wichelns, who was found dead last May after being missing since 2004. His remains were found inside a dog crate behind a home in Little Falls.
Troopers say the dead man's Social Security checks and benefits had been stolen and checks from his personal bank account had been forged and cashed.
Sekel was arraigned in the Town of German Flatts Court and remanded to Herkimer County Jail on $10,000 cash bail.
State police say they're still investigating and expect more arrests.
