ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The Coast Guard's winter icebreaking season in under way.
Operation Reliable Energy Northeast Winter officially kicked off in the Hudson region of New York on Monday as some ice had formed near Saugerties, about 35 miles south of Albany.
Coast Guard units along the Hudson River have been busy preparing for the icebreaking season by replacing ice buoys and installing special aids to navigation designed to ride underneath the ice.
An average of 300 vessels transit the Hudson River during the winter months, carrying over 10 million barrels of petroleum products.
Last year, the Coast Guard logged 1,603 hours of domestic icebreaking and assisted 37 vessels in need, while auxiliary crews flew 37 reconnaissance flights to look for frozen waterways.
The icebreaking season runs through March.
