Construction company given deadline extension

By THOMAS SCHWARTZ
POSTED: June 10, 2008

BROCTON — IC Construction and Brocton’s $416,000 contract to fix the the storage facility on Highland Avenue got another month added to the deadline concerning the past-due completion date.

The project was not finished by the initial deadline of April 30 but the $500 a day fee was not charged. Bob Williams of IC Construction asked for an extra 60 days to finish. They blamed the delay on 84 Lumber not being able to provide enough materials.

The fire destroyed the facility. The back is all but finished and features a wooden loft thanks to RW Painting, a part of IC Construction.

Bob Williams and Tom O’Brian with ICW met at each village meeting until they were given 30 days, no questions asked, but while the contract is being amended, the Village wanted to add parts that would ensure prompt completion.

IC Construction will not receive payment until substantial completion is achieved and the facility has been inspected by Garret Hacker of E&M engineer and survey company.

Since the fire in 2005, Brocton has had to store its highway vehicles at other locations. Some were stored at the High School, others in the parking lot at Village Hall and some at the waste water storage facility.

In early June, the building’s skeleton is up, but it still lacks a roof.

After his company missed the first deadline, Tom O’Brian, manager of IC Construction told Brocton Village Hall,“we couldn’t work in winter. ”

Trustee Dave Hazelton replied, “You chose not to run the project in the winter. You could have set up tents or tarp awnings, but for cost reasons or whatever, you didn’t.”

On Wednesday evening at Brocton Village Meeting, a motion was carried to extend the deadline to June 30.

Mayor J. Dale Abrams mentioned at earlier meetings that if he saw a concerted effort and construction seemed to be running smoothly, they would get their extension. It appears that Williams has followed through with the “surge of completion” he promised.

One of the complaints that the trustees had about the slow job that IC was doing was that there were only a few workers on the job at a time. On the date of the Village meeting, there were six working on it.

Ok, it is Highland AVENUE, the Village has no police car and if we did there would be no need to store it as we have no one to use it. Fire trucks are pretty much stored at our FIRE HALL. Also the fire was 2 years ago November. So these things have sat out for longer than 7 months, which is the general complaint.

Does anyone fact check or edit for this paper anymore? The title has a misspelling in it. There are multiple errors in the article.

The school gets copies of this paper everyday, I can only assume for reading & learning. What do they learn from this? That bad grammar, mistakes & poor research are ok???
