4-H holds beef, poultry and hog shows

As always at the Chautauqua County Fair, there have been many events and shows. Some shows earlier in the week were the 4-H Beef show, the 4-H Poultry show and the 4-H Hog show.

In the 4-H Poultry Barn many 4-Hers came out winners. Two girls walked away with the most wins this year. Cassandra Chapman received Best Standard Fowl with her Black Silkie. Cassandra also walked away with Best Water Fowl, Best Bantam and second place in the Poultry Senior Division Showmanship Contest.

Cassandra was not the only winner in the 2008 4-H Poultry show. Maggie Mason also won her share of awards. Maggie won Best in her class for her American Barred Rock. She won best in class for her English Buff Orpington and also for her Continental Polish. Maggie also used her skills in Poultry to receive first in the Senior Division for Poultry Showmanship. Other winners in the Poultry Show were Best in Class Mediterranean Minarca that went to Bryan Tenpas.

Brandon Boyer won best meat production in the Poultry barn. In the Junior Division of Showmanship Bryan Tenpas and Brandon Baron tied for second place. Congratulations to all the other 4-H winners as well!

The 4-H Beef Program also held their 2008 4-H Beef show. The whole barn is filled with beautifully finished livestock that all did very well. Nick Congdon received the high honors of Grand Champion Showman. Along with winning Grand Champion Showman he won Grand Champion Market Steer as well. Sarah Osborne did just as well following right behind Nick with Reserve Champion Showman and Reserve champion market steer. Along with these winnings she received Supreme Champion Female. Kim Walker followed with Reserve Champion Female with her female. Many other winners were found among the prize winning livestock. Grand Champion Heifer Showman went to Abbie Grzegorzewski followed by Adam Walker as Reserve Champion Heifer Showman.

Among the market classes, awards were given not just to Grand and Reserve but also to Highly Commended Market Steer going to Cym Carlson. That was followed by Jeffrey Hatch with a Commended Market Steer.

Along with the many winners in the 4-H Beef barn and the 4-H Poultry barn, many more winners can be found walking through the 4-H Hog barn. There seems to be a barn full of winners! The Hog show went for many hours going through both Showmanship and the market show. At the Showmanship show, five individuals were recognized. Grand Champion Showman went to Garrett Hansen. Reserve Grand Champion went to Matt Morrison. Third overall went to Cody Styers and fourth overall went to Beth Paterniti. Fifth overall went to Madison Styers, who was a first year junior showman this year. Penny Nixon, swine project coordinator commented, "There has never been a first-year showman get so highly placed. We are proud of all our youth in the hog project."

Continuing with the Showmanship show there were six divisions. Senior Intermediate, being the most experienced showman, had Matt Morrison in first and Cody Styers in second. In the Senior Novice division, first went to Garrett Hansen and second went to Beth Paterniti. Among the Junior Intermediate showmanship class, Patrick Kibbe took first and Jacob Short took second. Following the Junior Intermediate was the Junior Novice, which was won by Maria Childs in first and Adam Einink in second. For the first year senior showman, Cassandra Chapman was the only one in her class but was able to show her stuff amongst some alumni hog showman.

Lastly was the first year junior showman class. In first was Madison Styers and second was Allison Skinner. Following the showmanship class was the market hog show. Grand Champion of the Market Hog show was Patrick Kibbe and Reserve Champion was Matt Morrison. The market classes are divided in weight classes. The first weight class was the 220-pound class which was won by Garrett Hansen and followed by Emily Minor in second. Next was the 220-230 pound class. In first was Allan Jackson and second was Rachel Ecklund. After that was the 231-235 pound class which had Paige Bernett in first and Cody Styers in second. The 237-241 pound class followed with Matt Morrison in first and Maureen Kibbe in second. Next was the 242-250 pound class which was won by Patrick Kibbe and in second was Sarah Gibson. The 250-254 class followed and that had Matt Morrison in first and Rachel Ecklund second.

After that was the second to last class with 255-258 pound hogs. Patrick Kibbe took first and Emily Minor took second. The last class was the heaviest hogs with a weight range of 259-270 pounds. Maureen Kibbe took first and Brandon Decker took second.
