Group outlines plans to build community residence
By JOAN JOSEPHSONCASSADAGA - A letter of intent received by Cassadaga Mayor Mary Jo Carlson Bauer from the Chautauqua County Resource Center outlines plans to build a six-bedroom community residence in the village.
The home, to be constructed on property located at the corner of Frisbee and Bachellor Hill roads, will house individuals with mental and developmental disabilities, the letter notes.
"The mission of our agency is to support individuals with disabilities and other challenges in achieving maximum independence, contributing to their community, experiencing lifelong growth and enjoying quality of life," the letter states.
The community residential program provides housing, meals, companionship, social events, and, if necessary, full-time supervision from professionally trained staff.
During weekdays, residents will work or participate in appropriate daytime activities.
The village has 40 days to respond to the plan.
n It can approve the site for the residence.
n Suggest one or more suitable sites within the Town of Stockton which could accommodate such a facility.
n Object to the establishment of a facility because to do so would result in a concentration of community residential facilities that would cause the nature and character of the area to be substantially altered.
The law indicates that the municipality may hold a public meeting on the facility if it so desires; however, this is not mandatory.
If Cassadaga does not respond within 40 days, the Resource Center may establish a community residence at the site.
