Car crash apparent cause of Saturday morning blaze

October 5, 2008
The OBSERVER

An apparent one-vehicle accident early Saturday morning brought fire crews out to battle a fire that spread to a nearby home.

According to a Dunkirk Fire Department report, crews responded at 2:23 a.m. to 166 E. 2nd St. to find a car had sheered off a utility pole and hit the house. Both gasoline from the vehicle's ruptured fuel tank and natural gas from a struck gas meter had ignited, setting fire to both the car and house.

The resident of the house, who was home at the time of the fire, was alerted by a neighbor and brought to safety. She was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital by ambulance for evaluation.

Firefighters used hand lines to knock the exterior fire down while interior crews advanced line to extinguish the spreading flames. Utility crews were also called in.

The driver of the involved vehicle was not found at the scene.
