Harvest is Plentiful concert returns

October 25, 2008
Observer Today

This year's The Harvest is Plentiful concert is Sunday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. at SS. Columba/Brigid on the corner of Eagle and Hickory streets, Buffalo. This is the 18th year that SS. Columba/Brigid Church's Gospel Choir, under the direction of Lynda Martin, and St. Joseph Church's Voice and Handbell choirs from Fredonia, under the direction of Lucy Hurley, have joined forces for a concert that has a variety of Christian music styles.

The churches take turns hosting the concert each year. This year's concert has an added treat, as St. Martin de Porres Church's Gospel choir from Buffalo, under the direction of Ella Robinson, will also join this already dynamic duo. The choirs will perform individually as well as a Mass choir together. The "Just In Tyme" dance team will also join the choirs in the dramatic arrangement of "Great is the Lord" by Esau Courtney III. There will also be some traditional gospel music in "Somebody's Knockin' At Your Door" as well as more contemporary gospel melodies in "Stretching It Out" by Melvin E. Bryant Jr. and "God Wants a Yes" by James Hall. The answer to "God Wants a Yes" will be the well-known Dan Schutte song, "Here I Am Lord," arranged by Arnold B. Sherman for SATB choir and Handbell choir. It will be performed by all three voice choirs and accompanied by the St. Joseph Church Handbell choir.

The handbell choir will also perform "Bwana Asifwe," which means "Praise the Lord" in the Swahili language. It has an upbeat and rhythmic African flavor and will incorporate African drumming and other percussion instruments. "Holy, Holy" a Latin gospel praise song by the Gutierrex Brothers, will be performed by SS Columba/Brigid church's men's quartet. The handbell choir will once again join the voice choirs in their "signature song" and final selection, "Rejoice" by Kenneth W. Louis, with a festive handbell arrangement by Hurley.

All are welcome to attend.

St. Joseph Church will have a bus for those from the parish and community wishing to attend the concert. Bus tickets may be purchased after the Sunday Masses on the weekends of Oct. 25 and 26 and Nov. 1 and 2. Tickets are also available at the church office from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. weekdays. The bus will leave from St. Joseph Church, 145 E. Main St., Fredonia, on the date of the concert at 4:30 p.m. sharp and return to the church between 9:30 and 10 p.m. The cost will be $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.
