Girl Scout leaders review activities

November 3, 2008
The OBSERVER

The October meeting of the Dunkirk/Fredonia/Brocton Girl Scouts of Western New York was held recently with 18 in attendance. Donna Brisky, service unit manager, called the meeting to order.

It was announced that the QSP magazine and candy sale will start soon. Brisky is chairwoman for Dunkirk and Fredonia and Susan Roberts is chairwoman for Brocton. Brisky explained the program. The theme this year is "Go Green." Ten names are needed to be completed in the address book in order to earn a patch and 12 names are required on an e-mail address to receive a different patch. Samples of the product were given out to leaders along with paperwork. Brisky has incentives that leaders can take to their meetings or set up a time with her for her to bring to a troop meeting.

Lori Felt and Brisky planned an Investiture and Rededication Ceremony. New leaders were recognized, including Jennifer Jackson, who has a Brownie Troop in Dunkirk, and Catherine D'Agostino, who has a Brownie Troop in Fredonia. Each received a new Girl Scout pin and insignia tab. Ruth Klein, Brocton Brownie and Junior leader, received her five-year pin.

Connie Wojcinski and Marie Tomlinson received a special award, "Women of the Wilderness," for their tireless effort and contribution to Girl Scout camping. For many years, they have entertained and taught girls the basics of camping by going out of their way to take girls on weekends to Camp Gross. After the ceremony, the meeting was recalled to order. Brisky took a head count of girls in troops. There are currently 23 troops in the area.

Treasury and minutes of the prior meeting were read and approved. Karen Mosier has stepped down as field staff with the Girl Scouts. Janice Valvo is the new recruitment manager. Her extension at the council office is 224.

Donna Banach spoke briefly about the Applebee's breakfast that was held. She is planning another one next year during the second week of September.

Wojcinski and Tomlinson spoke briefly on the fall campout in September. Eight Cadettes, eight Juniors, five Brownies and two Daisys attended.

The next ones will be held maximum. Sign up will be soon. The last camp out is May 29 to 31. This is open to all age levels. More information will follow at meetings.

Brisky reminded leaders of the bake sale on Fridays at the Dunkirk Moose Lodge 89. It is the first and third Friday of each month. Troops can sign up for a specific date that is open.

The meeting ended with a surprise bridal shower for Carrie Wright, Brocton Junior leader. The next meeting is today at 6:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church cafeteria. Anyone unable to attend is asked to call Brisky at 366-4381 or Janice Valvo at the council office at 800-373-3295.
