The lake-effect snow warning became reality for Dunkirk-Fredonia this morning.
Nearly a foot of snow fell in parts of the area overnight, making the morning drive a little longer and hectic.
Despite the heavy snow, only one school district was closed this morning - Ripley Central Schools.
The lake-effect snow warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday.
Bands of snow will become more intense southeast of Lake Erie and accumulations in localized narrow bands could be as much as six to 10 inches of new snow.
Interstate 86 will be most impacted from Jamestown to Steamburg.
A lull in activity is expected from late Thursday until this morning as winds shift to a more northerly direction.
Then, the winds will line up again from the northwest with intense lake effect snow expected from midday today right through much of Saturday.
Storm snow totals of one to two feet are likely in the most persistent bands and will cause significant travel problems.
In lake effect snow, the weather can vary from locally heavy snow fall in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away.
Anyone traveling across the region should be prepared for rapid changes in road and visibility conditions.
