PERRYSBURG - Town of Perrysburg Supervisor Dennis Stopen opened Monday night's meeting with some comments about the soon to be inaugurated president.
"If you got any word with God, make a prayer that he'll be able to do half of what he says he can do and maybe we can help him with the other half." He went on to say, "I think the next couple of years are going to test everybody's metal ... It's going to be a historic moment for this country and for us and something that I think we need to look forward to."
Another thing residents can look forward to in 2009 is a refurbished walking trail. William Cole from Boy Scout Troop 276 of Gowanda came to the board with a special request. He was accompanied by his father, William Cole, and Assistant Senior Troop Leader Michael Embs.
"I'm attempting to receive my Eagle Scout, and in order to do that I have to perform a community service project. I'm going to propose a trail in the town park Half of it is undeveloped," Cole said.
He was well prepared with a map and a detailed description of the project, which will include foot bridges and signs. Cole indicated that he would like to begin work this spring. He anticipates the project will take about 248 hours of labor to be performed in nine weekends over eight months at a cost of between $700 and $1,000.
Budget Officer Cindy Lauer told Cole that there are two grants which his project might qualify for that could meet some or all of his budget needs.
The town board passed a resolution to support the project and they agreed to help with costs if necessary. Cole has a plan for that as well.
"We can make up the rest of the cost with fundraising and donations," he said.
Highway Superintendent Dan Stang reported an impressive 114 inches of snow for November and December. To put that number in perspective, Stang explained, "There's years we only get 120 inches all year." Stang also updated the board on the status of the town's pickup truck which was stolen in November. The truck has since been returned, and currently Stang is working to reach an agreement with the Town's insurance company regarding compensation for damages the truck sustained.
Some highlights of the 2009 organizational resolutions passed at the meeting are as follows:
The mileage rate for Town employees was set at 45 cents per mile.
Dick Gable was appointed to the position of Deputy Supervisor.
The following salaries were set: Town Supervisor-$6,000, Town council members-$2,100 each, Town Clerk-$21,000, and Town Justices-$5,750 each.
A public hearing was set for Feb. 9 immediately preceding the regularly scheduled meeting, at 6:30 p.m. to go over the proposed local law which will govern wind energy.
