GOWANDA - The Gowanda Central School Adult/Community Education program has announced its spring 2009 courses, with many new classes designed with the community in mind. Registration and class fees are due by Jan. 30. The following is a brief listing and description of the classes being offered:
Got Snow: Make a snowman lamp using the pen and ink technique. Saturday, Feb. 7, 9 a.m. to noon. Class fee, $10; supply fee, $21.50.
Lap Quilts: Quilt-in-a-day method lap quilt/wall hanging. Six sessions; Feb. 26, March 5, 12, 19, 26 and April 2, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. $20.
Greeting Cards: Learn how to make greeting cards for all occasions. Ten cards total. Monday, Feb. 23, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Class fee, $10; supply fee, $15. Another class Monday, May 18, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Class fee, $10; supply fee, $15.
Wood Beaded Jewelry: Learn how to make a necklace, bracelet and earrings of wood beads. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Class fee, $10; supply fee, $10.
Starlight Candle Bright: Canvas design 11x14 using the pen and ink technique. Saturday, March 7 and 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. Class fee, $10; supply fee, $15.
Sewing Up Loose Ends: Open sew night to start or finish any project. Wednesdays, Feb. 25, March 11 and 25, April 1 and 22, May 6, 6 to 8 p.m. $2 per session.
Glass Beaded Jewelry: Make a necklace, bracelet and earrings from polished glass beads. Wednesday, March 11, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Class fee, $10; supply fee, $10.
Mini Scrapbook: Scrapbook made from file folder medical kardex style. Monday, March 23 and 30, April 6, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Class fee, $10; supply fee, $30.
Time To Plant: Spring sun catcher using the pen and ink technique. Thursday, April 2, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Class fee, $10; supply fee, $14. ($4 if you bought the packet in the fall)
Quilted Wall Hanging: Learn to sew a block pattern wall hanging. Tuesday, April 21, 28, May 5, 12. Class fee $20.
= Creating Meaningful Scrapbooks: Beginners and experienced scrapbookers will work on albums and learn new techniques. Monday, April 20 and 27 from 6-9 p.m. Class fee $10, supply fee $8.
Feast for the Heart: Birdhouse design will be projected on slate using the pen and ink technique. Saturday, May 2 and 16, 9 a.m. to noon. Class fee $10, supply fee $20.
Let's Make Pie: Become a pie baker. Tuesday, March 10, 17 and 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Class Fee $10, supply fee $5.
= Cake Basics: Learn to bake, frost and decorate cakes, Thursday, April 23, 30, May 7 and 14, 6:30 to 8:30 p,m. Class fee $10, supply fee $10.
Easter Chocolate: Make solid candies for Easter, using candy molds. Tuesday and Wednesday April 7 and 8 from 6-8 p.m. Class fee $10, supply fee $8.
Holistic and Mindful Cooking: Learn how to shop for, cook and prepare healthy meals. Wednesday, March 4, 7-8 p.m. Class fee $15 or free through health insurance plan.
Intro to Microsoft Office: Learn to use MicroSoft Word, a popular document computer program. Thursday, Feb. 5, 12 and 26, 6:30 pm. to 8:30 p.m. Class fee $25.
Intro to Microsoft Excel: Learn the many ways one can use Excel spreadsheets. Thursday, March 5, 12, and 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Class fee $25.
= Cyber Safety for Parents: Expert tips to educate children and adults to be safer on and offline. Monday, Feb. 23. Free.
Adobe Photoshop CS2: Improve your photos with the Photoshop CS2 program. Tuesday, Apr. 21, 28, May 5, 12, and 19 from 7-9 p.m. Class fee $20.
Five-Hour Pre-Licensing Driving Course: Required to schedule your road test. Must attend both nights. March 2 and 3, April 6 and 7, May 4 and 5, or June 1 and 2. Runs 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. Class fee $20.
= GED Prep Classes: Courses covering topics found on the GED test. Continuous enrollment. Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Free.
Defensive Driving Course: Reduce your auto insurance premiums or reduce points on your driving record by completing this course. March 24 and 25 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Class fee $35. Another class is set for May 26 and 27, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Class fee $35.
Taking Better Photos: Class will cover subjects such as exposure, composition, lighting, still life and much more to take better photos. Tuesday, Feb. 24, March 3, 10, 24, and 31 from 7-9 p.m. Class fee $20.
Pregnancy and Delivery: Stay healthy with tips, exercise and much more. Mondays 6-9 p.m., Feb. 23 or March 16 or April 20 or May 18. Class fee $5. Supply fee $25.
Dog Training Beginner Obedience: Teaching your dog to sit, stay, come, walk, not to jump, chew or nip. Monday, March 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30. Class fee is $125.
Growing Roses: How to plant, feed, spray and take care of your roses. Leave with a rose bush. April 7 and 9 from 7-9 p.m. Class fee $10. Supply fee $10.
Container Gardening: Putting together a container of plants for sun or shade. Tuesday, May 12 from 7-9 p.m. Class fee $10, supply fee $8.
Eating Sensibly: Create a healthier lifestyle. Learn nutrition, behavior and success. Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Class fee $15 or free through health insurance.
= Injury Prevention: Exercise physiologist teaches how to prevent injuries, treatment, and improving posture. Wednesday, April 22 from 7-8 p.m. Class fee $15 or free through health insurance.
Managing Your Personal Stress: Stress reduction workshop. Wednesday, May 13 from 7-8 p.m. Class fee $15 or free through health insurance.
= Aerobics Classes: Increase energy, lose weight, learn cool dance moves and have fun; 24 sessions. Every Tuesday and Thursday, starting Feb. 3, 6 -7 p.m. Class fee $120 for all 24 sessions.
= Yogalates: Improve strength, flexibility and balance. Yoga and pilates rolled into one; 16 sessions. Every Monday and Wednesday, starting Feb. 2, from 4-5 p.m. Class fee $136 of free through health insurance.
= Morning Swim: Morning swim will prepare you for the day ahead. Monday-Friday 5:30 to 7 a.m. continuously. The cost is $55 a month.
Water Aerobics: Fun, low impact exercise. Mondays and Wednesdays 7-8 p.m. The cost is $3 per visit.
Lap Swim: Swim at your own pace. Mondays and Wednesdays, 8-9 p.m. The cost is $3 per visit.
Family Swim: Bring the family for a night of swimming. Thursdays 7-8 p.m. The cost is $1 per person.
Swimming Lessons: For children ages 3 to 18. Saturdays 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $30 for 10 sessions. Continuous enrollment.
Wave Runners Swim Team: Join the swim team. Open to children ages 3 to 18. Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5-7 p.m. Continuous enrollment.
Open Weight Lifting: Strength train according to your own routine. Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:45 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 6 to 7:15 a.m. The cost is $3 per session.
Hall Walking: Walk the halls of GCS and exercise for free. Monday to Friday, 3-7 p.m.
