Sunset Bay to participate in Great American Cleanup

Sunset Bay residents have organized a cleanup effort for the bay area this Saturday, in conjunction with the 2009 Great American Cleanup. The idea is to pick up litter and debris throughout the bay in order to enhance the beauty of the neighborhood while preparing the bay for the approaching tourist season.

"I just want to make an important distinction," Hanover Supervisor Katherine Tampio said at a recent town board meeting. "It is not to remove household garbage; the intent is just to clean up the neighborhoods in the community."

Cleanup efforts will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. All are welcome to participate, with those interested to meet at the Sunset Bay Fire Hall at 9 a.m. Volunteers should wear good shoes. Garbage bags, gloves and granola bars will be provided.

Public hearing on Pomfret water district tonight

"The proposed town water district will be up for a public hearing today," Pomfret Supervisor Don Steger said. "No voting will be taking place at that meeting. Unless the engineers need approval as soon as possible, we'll probably be waiting until our regular meeting next Wednesday to approve the district."

The town has already declared itself lead agency in the project and has already received a map, plan, and report for the proposed district from engineers Wendell Duchscherer. Matters pertaining to the State Environmental Quality Review Act will also be up for discussion.
