Grievance Day scheduled for May 27 in Persia

May 22, 2009
By JACKI COMELLO

PERSIA - Assessor Mary Bailey reported that the tentative property tax assessment total for the Town of Persia is down $400,000 from last year.

"With so little building permit activity in the town, there is little to offset this decrease," she said. Residents were also informed that Grievance Day is May 27 between 4 and 8 p.m.

Town Clerk Kristen Schaus advised residents that the cost for hunting and fishing licenses has increased by $10 for the 2009-2010 season. Detailed pricing information is available at the Town Hall.

Schaus presented the board with information about a new software program that would allow the acceptance of credit and debit cards for payments from residents. The new service claims to improve public service and encourage prompt payment.

"I think it would be an excellent program for the clerk's office," Schaus said.

More information to include pricing will be provided at a later date.

At the request of Schaus, the board passed a resolution opposing a change that would make the positions of town clerk, receiver of taxes, and highway superintendent appointed positions rather than elected. Recently, Senate Bill 56-A, which would have enacted this change, was defeated. The resolution is a preventative measure against future legislation. "I appreciate everyone's support," Schaus said.

In other news:

Highway Superintendent Dan Ackley reported that the Town's 1983 Mack truck sold for $2,000 at a recent auction. He also indicated that the pickup truck will need to be replaced soon. Supervisor Mel LeBar asked Ackley to bring some figures before the board at the next meeting.

Councilperson Pat Wick advised the board that she is still working on details regarding replacing the front door on the town hall, repairing the front steps, and installing the new railings at the entrance.

Councilmembers Paula Schueler and Gloria Tomaszewski recently attended the 16th Annual Southern Tier West Local Government Conference at Houghton College. Tomaszewski reported that based on newly acquired knowledge from the training sessions, members of the Town's zoning and planning boards would have to be reappointed to their positions because they failed to take the required oath of office.

The board will meet again on June 11 at 7 p.m.
