Imposter unmarked police car reported in region

By ROBERT RIZZUTO
POSTED: June 26, 2009

The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department and the Dunkirk Police are advising the public to be alert that there is a black vehicle resembling an unmarked ford Crown Victoria attempting to pull people over in the northern part of the county.

According to the sheriff's department, there were two separate incidents in the past two days, although limited information was available from the Dunkirk Police Department due to shift change Thursday.

With the incident on Route 60 that the deputies handled, Undersheriff Chuck Holder said that the car pulled over a woman who questioned the situation.

"Luckily, this woman that they attempted to stop was savvy and she kept her doors locked," Holder said. "She said that she thought something was off because they didn't look like cops, and she just pulled off. They never even got out of the car."

That incident happened at 8 a.m. Thursday, and the Dunkirk incident supposedly happened on Wednesday.

The incident in Dunkirk reportedly involved one white man in the car while the second incident involved two white men.

Law Enforcement officials are urging the public to use common sense and be alert to any attempted traffic stop that looks suspicious. The sheriff's department is advising anyone pulled over by an unmarked vehicle to keep the doors locked and the window down only a short distance.

"Typically it has to be an egregious offense for an unmarked vehicle to pull someone over," Holder said. "Out lieutenants on road patrol in unmarked cars are in uniform and if it's an unmarked car with an investigator or even me, it would have to be pretty serious to be stopped."

The sheriff's department is recommending that if a suspicious unmarked car tries to pull you over, drivers should not get into a high-speed chase, but rather drive to a shopping plaza, a restaurant or other visible public place before stopping.

Holder also said that people can call 911 from their cell phone and the dispatcher will be able to tell them if it is a legitimate traffic stop or not.
