Fredonia water line break update (2 p.m.)

July 9, 2009
Michael Rukavina

According to Fredonia Mayor Michael Sullivan, some areas on Water Street were without water for a good part of this morning and will continue to be for at least the next few hours.

Some areas on Water Street past Ryan Place and toward BOCES were at a trickle of water at best, he said, and as of 10:45 a.m. reports indicated some apartments past Canadaway Creek on Water Street toward Route 20 were without water completely. After noon Sullivan was notified that the business district of Water Street was without water.

During a press conference at 1 p.m. Sullivan said that crews eventually found the right shutoff valves and the water leak has subsided.

"An 18-inch long gash was found inside the pipe just outside of the Canadaway Creek bed and inches away from our wastewater lines down there," he said. "Crews are working to put a sleeve on it right now and we'll be able to put all of the water back on this evening."

The last valve to shut off the leak was found on Water Street, which is reason many businesses and residents are without water at this time.

"As far as we know everyone else is back on right now," Sullivan said.

The boil order for village residents has not yet been lifted at this time. Sullivan said the boil order will most likely last through Saturday evening. All residents in the village may still continue to experience low pressure until all work is complete.

Turn to the Friday, July 10 edition of the OBSERVER for the complete story.
