Dunkirk native to take part in sub ceremony

July 29, 2009
The OBSERVER

GROTON, Conn. (AP) - Officials at the Naval Submarine Base in Connecticut say former first lady Laura Bush will take part in a change of command ceremony for the USS Texas this week.

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the base in Groton. Navy officials say Bush will give brief remarks as Cmdr. Robert Roncska formally takes over command from Cmdr. James Gray.

Bush participated in the laying of the ship's keel when she was first lady of Texas. She also spoke at the submarine's christening in 2004 and its commissioning in 2006 when she was the nation's first lady.

Roncska, a native of Dunkirk, served as naval aide to President George W. Bush from 2006 to 2008. Gray, from Dover, Del., is moving to the executive panel of the chief of naval operations.
