SHERIDAN - The Sheridan United Methodist Church celebrated its 200th anniversary on Sunday, July 26. In attendance were former pastors Rev. Ken Babcock, Rev. Judy Cole, Rev. Harold Schwantes, and their families, as well as Audrey Foley, wife of the late Rev. Donald Foley. New York State Senator Catharine Young and County Executive Greg Edwards spoke to commend the church and its congregation. Sen. Young brought a proclamation from the New York State Senate.
Pastor Molly T. Golando read letters sharing memories from previous ministers. She also read congratulatory letters from Assemblyman William Parment and Congressman Brian Higgins. In addition, Higgins sent a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition noting the church's service to the community.
The service included three hymns from the 1700s; a six-handed keyboard rendition of The Battle Hymn of the Republic; and a gospel solo piece by Janice Delcamp, "Ain't No Grave." The choir anthem was entitled "Today." Pastor Golando's sermon, "A View from the Chair," took the perspective of an altar chair still in existence from the 1830s and all the history it has witnessed over the decades.
Gladiola flower arrangements for the altar were created by Hamlet Farm, which has a long history related to Sheridan and Sheridan UMC. Linda Mosher and Karen Shevlin of the Bicentennial Committee distributed bicentennial booklets.
A potluck luncheon, historical display, and open houses in the church and parsonage followed the service.
