Filing deadline nears for flood disaster aid

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has issued an alert about the Nov. 3 deadline for filing disaster aid applications for damages caused by the August floods that hit the local communities.

Residents and businesses have less than one week to apply for federal assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, she noted.

Also, the U.S. Small Business Administration will be accepting applications for low interest loans are due by Nov. 3 for a physical loan and by June 4, 2010 for an economic injury loan.

"Western New York homeowners and small businesses were hit hard by the devastating summer storms and individual assistance will go a long way to provide the aid necessary to help the communities get back on their feet," she said.

FEMA individual assistance is available for those whose homes that were damaged by the August floods.

Such aid includes temporary housing, repair and construction.

The maximum aid amount is $30,300 per household for damage not covered by insurance.

The FEMA Public Assistance program provides assistance to state and local governments and certain not-for-profit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster damaged facilities.

To register for FEMA assistance, residents may call 800-621-3362; the hearing impaired may call via TTY at 800-462-7585.

Both lines are open Monday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The SBA provides low-interest loans to homeowners, renters, businesses and organizations to repair or replace property, equipment, inventory and business assets that were damaged in the disaster.
