Town results show new supervisor in Sheridan

Arkwright voters decided to extend the term of their supervisor to four years. In Pomfret, the incumbent clerk held on to her seat following a hotly contested race; and Sheridan will see a new face as its town supervisor. Those were just some of the highlights of the municipal races Tuesday night. Below are results of what took place. All numbers reported are considered unofficial. The results below exclude the town of Collins because one district had not reported to the Erie County Board of Elections as of 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

ARKWRIGHT

Arkwright voters approved a referendum that extends the supervisor's term of office from two years to four years. The unofficial vote was 134 yes to 110 no. The new term will become effective in 2011.

Current supervisor Frederic Norton, who ran unopposed for his second two year term, said he was very pleased with the outcome of the referendum.

"It will make the supervisor's role more effective," he said. Norton received 187 votes.

There was also no contest for the two council seats up for election this year. Incumbent Councilman Larry Ball received 190 votes and newcomer James R. Schaffer received 186 votes. All three ran on the Republican, Conservative, Independence and Working Families Parties.

CHARLOTTE

Two council seats were the only contest for the Charlotte Town Board with four candidates running for election. The seats were won by incumbent Varsi Peterson with 207 votes and Daniel W. Pavlock with 234 votes. David Richir received 114 votes and James Pavlock earned 104 votes. Running unopposed were Kenneth Bochmann who gained 302 votes as town supervisor; Darla Frost-Kianos was re-elected town clerk with 319 votes and Lewis Nickerson Sr. who was re-elected highway superintendent with 296 votes.

CHERRY CREEK

Cherry Creek town official candidates, all uncontested, earned their seats without any write-in votes.

Kevin C. Anderson (R) received 132 votes to win the town supervisor seat. Mary J. Pulliam (R) earned re-election as town clerk with 138 votes. James R. Abbey(R) and Carl D. Smallback (D,R) won the two open town council seats with 154 and 132 votes, respectively. Kenneth W. Chase was re-elected as superintendent of highways with 161 votes. Debra A. Gabel was elected as tax collector with 155 votes.

CHAUTAUQUA

Four candidates battled it out for two seats in the town of Chautauqua. The two seats were filled by Thomas J. Carlson (R, CC), who received 548 votes, and David P. Ward (R, CC), who received 489 votes. The race was close as Bill Burnett (D, I, C) finished with 461 votes, and Bryan Howard (D, I, C) finished with 337.

The rest of the races were uncontested. Chautauqua Town Justice James F. Fischer (D, R, I, C, W, CC) received 891 votes, and David J. Narducci (D, R, I, C, W, CC) received 863 votes.

Tim Wendell (D, R, C, CC) filled the vacancy of Chautauqua Town Superintendent of Highways after receiving 922 votes.

DAYTON

A total of 220 voters turned out for the uncontested town of Dayton elections.

Mark A. Smith (R) was elected as town supervisor with 144 votes. Ruth V. Bennett (R) was re-elected as town clerk with 140 votes. Edward M. Lulas (R) and Joseph P. Shull (R) were re-elected as councilmen with 128 and 118 votes, respectively. Kenneth C. Volk (R) was elected, with 144 votes, to a 2-year councilman term to fill a premature vacancy. Brian J. Taber (R) was re-elected as superintendent of highways with 121 votes. Tina M. Chupa (R) was re-elected as tax collector with 131 votes.

DUNKIRK TOWN

In the town justice race, Priscilla Penfold received 71 percent of the votes (222), with the write-in receiving 88 votes. Results on the write-in winner were unavailable at press time.

"I know how many votes were received but they wouldn't show me the name, so we won't know until it goes to Mayville and they read them," Town Supervisor Richard Purol said.

For superintendent of highways, Richard J. Butts Jr. won with 175 votes to William J. Jakubowski's 156 votes .

In the town's uncontested races, Town Supervisor Richard Purol received 253 of 254 votes cast, with one write-in ballot received; Town Clerk Jean Crane received 262 of 263 votes, with one write-in. For town council, Juan Pagan received 230 votes (49.145 percent), Ron Penharlow received 234 votes (50 percent) and four write-in votes were received.

HANOVER

Incumbent Fritz Seegert will continue as part of Hanover Town Council, along with Kevin O'Connell. Seegert garnered the majority of the votes, with 1,047 (43.086 percent); O'Connell received 760 votes (31.276 percent), Scott G. Ferry received 620 votes (25.514 percent) and three write-in ballots were cast.

"I just want to thank everyone for their support and to continue doing what I've been doing for the last four years," Seegert said.

Richard Saletta defeated Alan Hall in the town justice race, with 61.448 percent of the votes (781 votes) to Hall's 38.08 percent (484 votes).

PERRYSBURG

The Perrysburg Town Board will see no changes as all incumbents ran uncontested and won back their seats.

Dennis C. Stopen (R,D) was re-elected as town supervisor with 169 votes. Mary M. Watkins (R,D) was re-elected as town clerk with 229 votes. Richard M. Gabel (R,D) and Lynn W. Varney (R,D) were re-elected as councilmen with 215 and 150 votes, respectively. Daniel V. Stang (R,D) was re-elected as superintendent of highways with 221 votes.

PERSIA

A three-way race for two positions on the Persia Town Board ultimately went to the incumbents.

Gloria Tomaszewski (D,I,C) earned 202 votes and Paula J. Schueler earned 258 votes, securing re-election as councilmen. Cynthia Andolsek Dishman (R) received 111 votes.

Melvin J. LeBar (R,I,C) was re-elected as town supervisor with 242 votes. Arnold Andolsek (R,I,C) was re-elected as town justice with 282 votes.

POMFRET

The Pomfret town clerk race turned into a close one. Incumbent town clerk Roberta Valentine (D, C, W) held off challenger Tricia DeJoe (R, I) after she received 1,504 to DeJoe's 1,246. Her reappointment will begin Valentine's second term as town clerk.

All other races in the town were unopposed and included: Pomfret Town Supervisor Donald R. Steger (D, W) who received 1,771 votes; Pomfret Town Council members Charles P. Civiletto (R, I, C) who received 2,115 votes and Patricia A. Christina (R, I) who received 2,014 votes; and Pomfret Superintendent of Highways James E. Oakes, Jr. (R, I) who received 2,110 votes.

PORTLAND

Incumbent Highway Superintendent Charles Kelley Jr. was re-elected to another four-year term in office with a vote of 493. His opponent, Ronald Delcamp received 459 votes.

The only other contest in Portland was for tax collector with Susan Hindman elected with 536 votes. Her opponent Alfredo Valentin received 384 votes.

Running unopposed for re-election were Supervisor Daniel Schrantz who received 776 votes; town councilmen Rick Manzella with 593 vote and Jerry Boltz with 688 votes, town clerk Roxane Sobecki with 905 votes and town justice Robert Myers with 717 votes.

RIPLEY

Ripley Town Council member Douglas A. Bowen (Dem) and Patricia A. Hathaway (Dem) both ran unopposed. Bowen accumulated 247 votes and Hathaway 229.

SHERIDAN

Longtime Sheridan Town Supervisor John Walker II lost by 78 votes to Louis S. Delmonte Sr. Delmonte won with 54.217 percent (495) of the votes to Walker's 45.674 percent (417 votes).

"It was a very hard election and I ran against a very strong candidate," Delmonte said. "I was surprised to win - it's been an uphill fight, it's been a hard campaign."

STOCKTON

There was no contest for the seats on the Stockton Town Board up for election this year.

Incumbent Supervisor David Wilson was elected with 414 votes, Councilman Stanley Zembryski received 317 votes and Councilman Allen Chase earned 366 votes.

Otis Barber was re-elected town justice with 442 votes.

VILLENOVA

Melvin Conklin was elected to the Villenova Town Board with a vote of 151 and Sue Ecker-Newton was elected with a vote of 150.

WESTFIELD

Of the five races in the town of Westfield, three were contested. For the town supervisor race, Martha Bills was re-elected, receiving 887 votes against challenger Ronald D. Catalano with 479 votes.

For Westfield Town Council, two seats were up. Republican Ray Schuster received 908 votes, Democrat Dave Spann received 727 votes, Democrat George Kolibar received 423 votes and Republican Carl Vilardo received 635 votes.

Tim Smith (R) defeated Joshua Freifeld (D) 940 to 404 in the Westfield Town Clerk race.

Unopposed races include Westfield Town Justice Jerry Laporte (D, R, C) who received 1,269 votes while Westfield Superintendent of Highways candidate David G. Babcock (Dem, Rep) received 1,292.

"It will make the supervisor's role more effective," he said. Norton received 187 votes.

There was also no contest for the two council seats up for election this year. Incumbent Councilman Larry Ball received 190 votes and newcomer James R. Schaffer received 186 votes. All three ran on the Republican, Conservative, Independence and Working Families Parties.

CHARLOTTE

Two council seats were the only contest for the Charlotte Town Board with four candidates running for election. The seats were won by incumbent Varsi Peterson with 207 votes and Daniel W.
