Middle grades hit hardest by H1N1

By JOAN JOSEPHSON OBSERVER Staff Writer
POSTED: November 10, 2009

SINCLAIRVILLE - The H1N1 flu has hit Cassadaga Valley Central students, particularly those in the middle school grades.

At Monday's school board meeting, middle school principal Rich Siegel said he has had up to 100 students out with the flu.

Because of this, Siegel said, he has postponed the middle school dance this weekend.

Elementary principals Roberta Traks and John Kwietniewski said students attending Cassadaga and Sinclairville Elementary Schools have been hit as well.

Superintendent John Brown said he has been monitoring the flu situation at Cassadaga Valley very closely.

"We have had between 10 percent and 15 percent of our students out with flu-like illnesses but I think we are leveling off," he said.

Board president David Christy said he understood people born in the '70s didn't have to worry because they had been exposed to the H1N1 in earlier years.

Kwietniewski said that theory doesn't always hold true.

"It wasn't like any flu I've ever had before," he said, owning up to being one of the sick ones at Sinclairville Elementary.

In more encouraging news, Siegel told the board the kinks in the Parent Portal Program have been ironed out.

He said a letter will be sent home with the students' report cards letting the parents know how to access the program.

Michele Starwalt described for the board the tutoring and mentoring program being provided CV students in grades six to 12 through the Chautauqua Striders on behalf of Chautauqua Opportunities.

"We help the students with tests, homework and organization," she said.

Currently, there are 40 students taking part in the program with 24 receiving tutoring, Starwalt said.

Brown said he appreciates the work Striders is doing for the CV students.

"We try to get as much support for our students as possible," he said.
