Blue Devils slay Ice Knights, 5-0
Special? To The OBSERVERGENESEO - Fredonia State scored its most impressive win of the early season, 5-0, at SUNYAC opponent Geneseo.
Alex Morton and Mat Hehr had two goals each while goaltender Pat Street made 22 saves to record the fourth shutout of his collegiate career.
"It was nice to see a couple of things," Fredonia State coach Jeff Meredith said. "We spent time on the power play and the penalty kill this week in practice. On the power play, we had two goals and our penalty kill was perfect on the evening. We just really spent time teaching it over again and getting input from our players. They provided the input and we started over, taught it and they did a good job of ironing out the wrinkles."
Morton's first goal and his fifth of the season broke a scoreless tie with 13 seconds remaining in the first period. His second goal of the game came late in the second period and upped Fredonia State's lead to 4-0. It also tied James Muscatello for the team lead with six goals each.
Hehr's two goals gave him five on the year while Bryan Ross (Livonia, Mich.) notched his third of the season. Ross added one assist while Muscatello and Jeff Aonso had two assists each.
"It was a real team effort," Meredith said. "We played tough. We won battles. That's the makeup of the group we have and I like to see that. I really like this team a lot. I am having a lot of fun with them. They are tough and they battle. Our game is getting better every day and we are seeing the progress in it and it's getting where we need it to be."
Fredonia State improved to 4-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the SUNYAC while Geneseo fell to 2-5-0.
The Blue Devils are back in SUNYAC action 7 p.m. today at Brockport.
"(Today) is enourmous," Meredith added. "It's important to put (Friday) behind us and refocus on getting a sweep this weekend."

Blue Devils split with Alfred
The Fredonia State women defeated Alfred University, 131-62, in a dual meet inside the Steele Hall Natatorium.
The Alfred men were 120-87 winners over the Blue Devils.
"The team in general, we are definitely ahead of last year at this time," Fredonia State coach Arthur Wang said. "We are posting better times. It's always something I have desired. This year it is more prevelant."
On the women's side, sophomore Juliana Walker won two individual events and was part of a winning relay. Walker touched out first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.56) and the 100-yard freestyle (:56.07). She also swam anchor on the winning 200-yard medley relay following freshman Emily Ginty, senior Taylor Kelly and junior Leiya Pujals. Their winning time was 1:57.61.
Fredonia State had two other two-time individual winners - junior Morgan Reisch and freshman Sarah Ficarro. Reisch was first in the 400-yard individual medley (5:00.32) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.95). Ficarro scored 225.45 points in 1-meter springboard diving. She also outscored the opposition off the 3-meter springboard with 221.80 points in what for her was an exhibition.Kelly added to her relay victory with an individual win in the 100-yard breast stroke (1:12.14). It, too, was an exhibition for Kelly.
Wang attributed the women's success to the leadership of the freshmen and sophomores.
"It's odd," Wang continued. "I would say it's rare for a freshman class to dictate the work ethic, but the lower classes are very blue collar and they work hard. It has raised the team's intensity as a whole. Every time if they set the standard, we are going to be in good position the next 2-4 years. I would rather coach hard-working kids than talented kids. No doubt about it."
On the men's side, seniors Christian Torres (Dunkirk) and Mike Seay were double individual winners. Torres was victorious off both springboards - 260.75 points off the 1-meter, 266.80 points off the 3-meter. Seay touched out first in the 400-yard individual medley (4:31.85) and the 100-yard backstroke (:56.49).
Several other Blue Devils turned in times and scores worthy of SUNYAC championship meet qualification.
"I was happy with the way we swam," Wang said. "We had a lot of season-bests and we have only a few people left who have not qualified for SUNYACs. We're definitely making progress."
Next up for the Blue Devils is a home meet Nov. 21 vs. Allegheny College at 1 p.m.
