Stockton board adopts 2010 budget

STOCKTON - There were no questions raised at the public hearing Tuesday on the Town of Stockton's proposed 2010 budget.

With the public hearing concluded, the board moved to adopt the proposed spending plan

It calls for total appropriations of $1,126,455; $349,600 in anticipated revenues; $125,000 in unexpended balance and a tax levy of $651,855.

The 2010 tax rate for the town is $5.637 per $1,000 of assessed property value for Cassadaga Village property owners and $6.468 per $1,000 for property owners outside the village.

These rates reflect a little more than a half-cent per $1,000 increase for village property owners and a 3.5 cent decrease per $1,000 for property owners outside the village.

The budget also calls for $4,000 for the town's light district and $95,625 for fire protection.

This brings the town outside the village tax bill to $8.71 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

Councilman John Beichner thanked budget officer Councilman Allen Chase for the work he has done on the 2010 spending plan.

"This is a tight budget, there is no fluff. We as a board are working to keep the town tax rate as law as possible," he said.

In other business, Highway Superintendent Aaron Burnett told the board he and his employees are finishing up projects and are getting ready for winter.

The town's new cold storage building is under construction and should be completed by the end of the month, he said.

In answer to a question raised by Councilman Bryan Meder about the county's tire amnesty program, Burnett said he believes it will continue.

"The county is looking for new projects in which the discarded tires can be used," he said.
