NORTH COLLINS - On Oct. 20, the North Collins Elementary PTA sponsored its second annual Family Math Night. Teachers from each grade level from kindergarten to sixth brought new ways to teach math from the Everyday Math Program currently used in the elementary building. Even pre-kindergartners visited their teacher for some fun interactive games on a floor mat.
For most families, Everyday Math is an unfamiliar program and much different from the way they learned math "back in the day." Teachers also brought along activities and games like Multiplication Baseball, Factor Bingo and math flashcards from the program for families to take for practice at home.
Kathy Conners-Meisenburg displayed online math programs and the current games on the Everyday Mathematics Program. In addition to sponsoring the evening, PTA supplied refreshments as well as giveaways of white boards, decks of cards and dice as door prizes to families in attendance. The event drew more than 75 students and their parents and grandparents.
In all, the evening provided families an opportunity to have fun while learning and spending some quality time together. The North Collins Elementary PTA will sponsor a Family Movie Night and several other family events throughout the school year.
