Internet numbers on rise

By JOHN D’AGOSTINO, OBSERVER Publisher
POSTED: November 27, 2009

Reader comments are becoming much more abundant on our Web site.

Over the last month, our site - www.observertoday.com - has averaged between 120 to 140 comments per week. Within the last few days, that number has tripled.

Due in large part to the Brocton-Fredonia school merger discussions, we have received 450 comments in the past week. Needless to say, most of them are one reader taking on another reader's opinion.

Some of those comments have, unfortunately, crossed the line. As our number of comments have increased, so have the number of comments we have removed.

Those comments are removed only when a reader flags the comment by "reporting abuse."

Print readership of our newspaper, currently around 33,000 daily, is more than seven times our Internet readership, which is about 4,300 a day.

Readers are welcome to send in their comments and concerns regarding the Fredonia-Brocton school centralization advisory vote, which is planned for Dec. 15.

With anything of this nature, there are already two factions - one in strong support for the merger, one greatly opposed.

Those wishing to send in opinions on the advisory vote, which only allows for the discussion of the centralization of both schools to continue, must get their views to our newspaper by Wednesday, Dec. 9. The final day we will publish letters on the subject is Sunday, Dec. 13.
