Canisius College has announced that David E. Ewing, Ph.D, will serve as the new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Ewing is currently the dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences at the State University of New York at Fredonia. He will begin in his new position at Canisius College on June 1, 2010.
"Dave will be an exceptional addition to the Canisius family," said Chadwick. "He has considerable experience in balancing the needs and initiatives of a college as complex as Canisius. He has a significant research background, and a proven track record of creating partnerships with people and organizations in the community."
In 2005, Ewing became SUNY Fredonia dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences and a professor of chemistry. As dean, Ewing oversees 11 departments, approximately 1,600 students and 85 full-time faculty. While in this position, Ewing developed new programs and strategic initiatives for the college, and managed personnel and budget responsibilities. He also serves as chair of the university's Executive Committee of the Science Technology Center project. The $60 million building is in the first of a two-phase project that will transform the science facilities.
As chief academic officer for the College of Arts and Sciences at Canisius, Ewing will oversee 134 full-time and more than 100 part-time faculty, who serve in 16 different academic departments that offer more than 30 majors. He will be responsible for leading the faculty to further their teaching, research and service, to their departments, programs and the college in general. Ewing will also manage the implementation of new academic programs, develop student support systems aimed at enhancing the college's student retention, and be responsible for the development of internal and external partnerships that contribute to and increase the success of the college in realizing its mission.
"I have learned a lot and gained valuable experience in public higher education but I am excited to return to a Catholic, Jesuit institution," said Ewing. "Canisius is a strong liberal arts institution which, by virtue of its mission and size, affords a personal and student-centered educational environment, in which both the academic and spiritual dimensions of students are nurtured."
