Versailles Volunteer Fire Company gives recap of 2009 efforts and activities
By JACKI COMELLO OBSERVER CorrespondentPERRYSBURG - Versailles Volunteer Fire Company secretary Joel Neu presented a year-end report at the Perrysburg Town Board meeting Monday night.
One of the highlights of the year was the construction of the new fire hall. Though a few small touches are needed before they deem the project complete, Neu said, "The members are quite pleased with the facility, and the functionality of it has surpassed expectations, especially the heating system." The total cost of the project to date is $115,000.
The operational highlight of the year was the assistance provided to several local communities during the August flood. "VFC (Versailles Fire Company) assisted in pumping cellars, clean up, standby in Gowanda for fire protection, traffic control and moral support," Neu reported. He went on to explain that the events of the summer left a lasting impression.
"The knowledge that 'we' living in this area are up to the challenges that can be put to us is profound. To be a part of this effort, however small, in the grand scheme, reinforces the effort are worth it," Neu said.
The company responded to 43 calls so far this year. Neu explained that though this number is lower than most years, the hours invested were high due to the flood.
There were numerous social events held throughout the year. The first annual Christmas Tree Lighting was held on Dec. 5 and a crowd of more than 30 attended. The festivities included caroling, traditional Christmas treats and a visit from Santa.
In closing, Neu took a moment to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous and safe New Year on behalf of the Versailles Volunteer Fire Company and the Ladies Auxiliary.
