Champion skater Kristi Yamaguchi previews the competition at the 2010 Winter Games

January 29, 2010
USA WEEKEND Magazine

Top individual U.S. athlete to watch:

"Evan Lysacek. He's our world champion going into the Olympics, so he's our big hope for a gold medal. He's an incredible technician and a very hard worker. He has a passion for the sport that you don't see often, which makes you believe in him and want to cheer for him."

Top U.S. couples to watch:

"Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto. They earned the silver in 2006 and have a chance to repeat. Their medal for ice dancing in Torino was the first we've earned at the Games for decades. We were slumping in dance before that, and then they came along and made us stronger. Also, look out for Meryl Davis and Charlie White. They've constantly placed at or near the top in competition this past year. The fact that we have two couples who could medal is huge this year."

International competitors who could dominate:

"Kim Yu-Na from South Korea is the current world champ and has been skating tremendously all year long. She'll be hard to beat. But the real intriguing story is the comeback of Evgeni Plushenko of Russia. He was the gold winner in 2006, but hasn't really competed much since. Then, a month ago, he appeared at a major international event called the Rostelecom Cup and blew everyone else out of the water. It's amazing to be away from world competition for so long and then dominate. He could be better than ever."
