Benefit for eighth-grader set for Sunday in Brocton

May 17, 2010
By JOAN JOSEPHSON

BROCTON - "She is an inspiration to us all; she has an upbeat, positive attitude."

That's how family friend Chris Sausman describes 13-year-old Abbey Malcolm, the daughter of Duane and Jayme Malcolm Appel, who is currently dealing with a brain tumor.

"She's had three operations so far, is undergoing chemotherapy and is continuing to attend classes at Brocton Central School where she is an eighth-grader," Sausman says.

In order to help her and her family with the expenses associated with her treatment, Abbey's friends have planned a Motorcycle Poker Run, pulled pork dinner, teen dance, live music and a heap of fun-filled activities for Sunday.

The events will be held at the Nickel Plate Depot on Central Avenue in Brocton beginning at noon.

Bike riders and bus riders will be asked to register from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the Nickel Plate with participants leaving at noon.

The registration will cost $20 for a single rider and $25 for a couple and the same price for bus riders.

The pulled pork dinner will be included in this cost.

Prizes for the Poker Run will be announced at the end of the run.

That isn't all.

There will be a teen dance from noon to 3 p.m. with a $2 admission cost.

This will feature a DJ and Karaoke with prizes and food available.

The Pulled Pork dinner will be available from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will cost $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

If they wish, children may substitute a hot dog for the pulled pork.

There will also be live music from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a chance to win a 32 inch flat screen television and a host of Chinese auction items.

Sausman says Abbey plans to attend this fund raiser to offer her thanks for the help the fund raiser participants are willing to provide her and her family.

"She really is remarkable and deserves the admiration that is coming her way," Sausman says.
