Goats, textiles and birds featured in Wednesday 4-H competitions

July 29, 2010
The OBSERVER

The 2010 Chautauqua County Fair has been a maze of excitement as Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County's 4-H members prepare, care for, and show their animals. Show results for 4-H exhibitors also continue the excitement.

The 4-H fun continued Wednesday with a number of contests and demonstrations in the Poultry and Goat barns, Livestock arena, 4-H Building and at the county fair mini-stage. Wednesday's Poultry barn competitions included Poultry Showmanship in which Rick Hare judged youth on the presentation of their birds and knowledge of breed standards and bird raising. Poultry Showmanship is divided into two divisions: juniors ages 8-13 and seniors ages 14 19. Cloverbuds, 4-H members ages 5-8, are eligible to display birds and present their birds to the judges and are not evaluated for placing. Instead, each child is recognized for his/her participation. In the Senior Division, Cassandra Chapman was first and Katie Tenpas was second. In the First Year Showmanship Class, Tessa Warner took first and Mylissa Becker earned second.

During the showmanship contest, 4-H Poultry project participants got their own chance to 'be the judge' in the Poultry Judging Contest. In this contest, project participants are assigned classes to watch and listen and then place. Scores are tallied based on the correlation of participants' choices and the professional judge's choice. Everyone that participated received a blue ribbon.

4-H Goat Program participants performed at the Goat Arena in the Dairy Goat and Meat Goat Shows. Youth were judged by Peter Snyder who evaluated youth in Showmanship Classes based on how well each youth and goat performed together. Youth in the Goat Show also participated in Dairy and Market Classes in which animals were judged on respective breed standards and in Market Classes on finish and projected carcass quality. Market Goat participants will sell their animals at the 4-H Meat Animal Sale on Friday, July 30 beginning at noon.

4-H members from throughout Region 1, (Chautauqua, Wyoming, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Erie, Orleans and Niagara counties), gathered Wednesday at the Chautauqua County Fair Horse Arena for the Regional Horse Judging Contest. Horse Judging is a skills contest in which 4-H Horse Project members can test their knowledge by 'being a judge.' Youth members judge classes of four horses including confirmation classes and performance classes. Youth evaluate, as a professional judge does, the balance, conformation, gaits and performance of each animal. Youth are also asked questions of each class they judge, helping to develop reasoning and critical evaluation of each animal. This year participants were from Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Wyoming counties. Congratulations to everyone.
