Joe Russo inside the lodge Tuesday celebrating New Jersey’s Hickey for reaching Dunkirk on his Walk Across America. Hickey’s journey began after his father lost his battle to prostate cancer, and almost lost his brother a year later to the same disease. Hickey said he walks to help raise awareness of cancer and is hoping to walk from the East Coast to Los Angeles. This is his fifth attempt as he has already accounted for more than 4,000 miles on foot over the past 12 years.
“I’d like to thank everyone, people and businesses in the county, without whose help I could not do what I’m doing,” Hickey said, referring to Chautauqua Therapeutic Massage, The Clarion, Dunkirk Motel which contacted the Holiday Motel in Westfield, Demetri’s, Rookie’s, Marie Couchman and Estelle at Pinewood’s Bed and Breakfast. “And everyone who stopped along the side of the road and offered their support.”
From Dunkirk he will continue to Westfield and on into Pennsylvania. For more information on his efforts and on his journey please visit www.cancerwalkusa.com.
