August 6, 2010
The OBSERVER

JAMESTOWN - The fourth annual International Humanitarian Law Dialogs, co-sponsored by the Robert H. Jackson Center, is an historic gathering of renowned international prosecutors from Nuremberg through present day who represent tribunals held in Rwanda, Germany, Sierra Leone, The Hague, Cambodia, and the former Yugoslavia.

The prosecutors will be joined by leading professionals in the legal and academic fields. The 2010 installation of the Dialogs, being held Aug. 30-31 at the Chautauqua Institution, will focus on "Reflections on Crimes Against Peace: Aggression in the 21st Century."

The sessions are free and open to the public (with the exception of meals). For more information, call the Robert H. Jackson Center at 483-6646.

Some of the highlights of the Dialogs will include updates from the current prosecutors, a dialog on the crime of aggression, a year-in-review of the international criminal courts, and the issuance of a fourth Chautauqua Declaration by all the prosecutors in attendance.

In addition, there will be a special film presentation of "War Don Don" at 2 p.m. on Aug. 29 at the Chautauqua Cinema (tickets are available for purchase directly at the theater).

Justice Robert H. Jackson was United States chief prosecutor of the principal Nazi war criminals at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany, during 1945-46. The Dialogs honor the legacy of Nuremberg as the first successful international effort to hold individuals criminally responsible for planning and waging aggressive war, committing war crimes and committing crimes against humanity. It founded the era of international criminal law and set standards that guide international prosecutors today. This event is made possible through the generous support of the following sponsors: American Society of International Law (ASIL), Case Western Reserve University, Chautauqua County Occupancy Tax, Chautauqua Institution, the Enough! Project, the Gebbie Foundation, IntLawGrrls, Planethood Foundation, Robert H. Jackson Center, Syracuse University School of Law, Washington University School of Law.

The Robert H. Jackson Center's mission is to advance the legacy of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson through education and exhibits, and by pursuing the relevance of his ideas for our generation. The Center is located at 305 E. Fourth St., Jamestown. Tours are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. E-mail at info@roberthjackson.org or visit online at www.roberthjackson.org.
